He started his career in 2012 signed to Spinnin' Records, being inspired from watching Tiësto's set during the 2004 Olympic Games. He released his Breakout Hit, "Animals", in 2013, making him the youngest record producer and DJ to both reach number one in Beatport as well as headlining Ultra Music Festival, at 17 years old. He would later release more songs in Spinnin' and compiled those songs in his first EP "Gold Skies" in 2014. Garrix left Spinnin' Records in 2015 due to ownership issues over his music.
In 2016, he started his own record label, Stmpd Rcrds and released its first single there. In the same year, he signed into Sony Records where he would make collaborations with big-name singers, including Bebe Rexha for "In the Name of Love" and Dua Lipa for "Scared to be Lonely" in the following year. He has also collaborated with David Guetta twice, for "So Far Away" and "Like I Do", with Brooks. He formed a supergroup with American producer Maejor called Area21 in 2016.
