Mazar was born Aug 13, 1964 in Jamaica, Queens, New York City, the daughter of Nancy and Harry Mazar (Harija Fogelmanis). Her father was born in German-occupied Latvia to a Jewish family. She had no knowledge of her father's ancestry until her twenties as he practiced Catholicism. Mazar's parents annulled their marriage shortly after she was born, and she spent her early life in the country in upstate New York with her mother. As a teenager, she relocated to Long Island, where she lived with her godparents.

In 2020, Mazar relocated to Firenze, Italy with her husband and their two daughters, the youngest of whom just graduated from high school in May and will start university in the fall.
“At my age, I'm about to be an empty nester. And I'm going into a period where I've spent the past 23 years being on top of my children, and now I have more freedom to go work and not feel guilty,” Mazar says of the new transitional period for the family.
