On the basis of a close examination of representative sources, we will develop a portrait of the varieties of Christianity in antiquity. What were the doctrines, practices and rituals of early Christians and how did these develop over time? What contexts informed the early Christian way of life? Students will also develop a variety of research skills integral to graduate level scholarship. Assignments: A. Weekly Preparation and Participation: for each session, students will type up and submit a document briefly summarizing each of the texts read (primary and secondary). Additionally, students will write a one page argumentative essay on one of the primary texts. Due every week there is class, even if another assignment is due. Worth 20% of final grade. B.
