കേരളത്തിൽ പ്രചാരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു ജനകീയ കലാരൂപമാണ് തുള്ളൽ. പതിനെട്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കവി കുഞ്ചൻ നമ്പ്യാരാണ് തുള്ളൽ പ്രസ്ത്ഥാനത്തിനു രൂപം നൽകിയത്. സാധാരണക്കാരന്റെ കഥകളി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന തുള്ളൽ കലാരൂപം, അതിന്റെ നർമ്മത്തിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞ സാമൂഹിക വിശകലനവും, വിമർശനങ്ങളും കൊണ്ട് അമ്പലമുറ്റത്തും സാംസ്കാരിക വേദികളിലും ഒരേ പോലെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
വളരെ രസകരമായ ഒരു ചരിത്രമുണ്ട് തുള്ളൽ പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്. നമ്പ്യാർ അമ്പലപ്പുഴയിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന കാലത്ത്‌ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ കൂത്തു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന ചാക്യാരെ തോൽപ്പിക്കാൻ ഒറ്റ രാത്രികൊണ്ട്‌ എഴുതി സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തതാണ് തുള്ളൽ എന്ന കലാരൂപമെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. നമ്പ്യാർക്ക് മുൻപേ തുള്ളലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്നും വാദം ഉണ്ട്. കണിയാന്മാരും വേലന്മാരുമാണ് അതു നടത്തിപ്പോന്നിരുന്നത്. കണിയാന്മാരുടെ കോലം തുളളലില്‍ ഇന്നും ഓട്ടന്‍തുള്ളലിന്‍റെ ജനകരൂപം കാണാം. എന്ത് തന്നെയായാലും, തുള്ളലിന്‌ ഇന്ന്‌ സുപരിചിതമായിട്ടുള്ള വ്യവസ്ഥാപിത രൂപം നൽകി അതിനെ ഒരു കലാ പ്രസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയത്‌ കുഞ്ചന്‍ നമ്പ്യാര്‍ തന്നെയാണ്‌. വരേണ്യ കലാരൂപങ്ങളായ കൂടിയാട്ടം, കൂത്ത്‌, കഥകളി, കൃഷ്ണനാട്ടം തുടങ്ങിയവയിൽ നിന്നും, ഗ്രാമീണകലാരൂപങ്ങളായ പടയണി, കോലം തുള്ളൽ മുതലായവയിൽ നിന്നും രസജനകങ്ങളായ പല അംശങ്ങളും സ്വീകരിച്ച്‌, ഒരു ജനകീയ കലാരൂപം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയാണ് നമ്പ്യാർ ചെയ്തത്.

Apart from being a prolific poet, Nambiar is also famous as the originator of the dance art form of Thull'll, most of his works were written for use in Thullal performances. Social criticism wrapped in humour is the hallmark of his works. Nambiar is one of the foremost comedians in Malayalam. Nambiar is believed to have been born at [1]Kalakkathu Veedu at Killikkurussimangalam in Palakkad district of the south Indian state of Kerala;.[2] He spent his early childhood at Killikkurussimangalam, his boyhood at Kudamaloor and youth at Ambalappuzha, and learnt Kalaripayattu and Sanskrit from such masters as Mathoor Panickar, Dronaballi Naicker and Nannikod Unni Ravi Kurup, before moving to the court of Marthanda Varma of Travancore in ; later, he served at the court of his successor Dharma Raja.[3] By the time he reached the royal court, he had already established himself as a poet.[note 1] The later part of his life, it is believed that Nambiar returned to Ambalapuzha where he died in , at the age of 65, reportedly due to rabies Many of Nambiar's verses have transformed into proverbs in Malayalam. 1. ചെറുപ്പ
