Our coursebook directed us to look at the above article, which was posted on ASX, to view some of Brassai’s work being a good example of a photographer with their own personal voice.
Brassai first became interested in photography back in 1930. He would wonder around the streets of Paris at night, where he lived, and was looking for a way to express the sights that he was seeing, saying that he ‘… wanted above all to photograph the night, which excited me’ (Brassai, G. 1970). This led him to produce is first and best known book Paris By Night, which was published in 1933.
Of his photography Brassai admits that his influences were from painters, writers and poets rather than other photographers. In particular he refers to two influencers.
The first being George de le Tour. This influence comes through in the way that Brassai uses artificial lights to light up his subjects akin to the way that George de le Tour used candlelight to light up his subjects in his paintings.
The other being Goethe (who was a German writer, playwright and poet). Brassai explains that Goethe started out as a romantic, but as he grew older he became more objective and that this showed through his work. It is this objectivity of Goethe that Brassai wished to bring to his work
